A VW key fob battery is usually a CR2032, 20 mm across and 3.2 mm thick. CR2025 is the thinner coin of that same width, 2.5 mm, and it shows up on some shells. The stamp on the old cell wins, and so does a code molded inside the cover.
CR2025, the thinner coin20 mm across, 2.5 mm thick. Some covers say this and will not close over a CR2032.
Lists disagree on Golf VII, some Tiguan Mk2 shells, and the newer Polo. Those pages say so and do not pick a winner. CR2016 is not the VW default. CR2450 does not fit the 20 mm well. The ID.4 fob is a coin cell, not a rechargeable pack.

One cell is the normal count. Plus is the branded face unless a mark in the shell says otherwise. A battery-only swap does not require programming. A dead fob still starts if you hold the whole fob, not the bare blade, on the marked spot. On many cars that spot is the steering column. On some Golf and ID.4 cars it is the console or the rear cup holder.
